Visit from Charlie

My little grandson, Charlie, turns one on Sunday! To celebrate his birthday and also Mother's Day, my daughter, Jenna, paid a surprise visit to school on Friday (and brought me a special treat - a Caribou coffee dark chocoate mocha - yum!). The kids have heard stories about Charlie all year, and also seen pictures of him, so they were very excited to meet him in real life.

He hung out at Centers,

checked out the desks, went with us to lunch, and...

went outside for recess!

The kids loved taking him down the slide,

and they were so careful with him (don't worry, Jenna and I were standing close by).

April Students of the Month

Cock-A-Doodle-Doo, Barnyard Hullabaloo!

The big day of our concert finally arrived on Tuesday, April 19th! The kids have been practicing for weeks, and they were very excited to get to perform their songs for an audience. We walked to the high school in the morning for one last rehearsal on the stage in the auditorium. The rest of the day went by pretty slowly, but at last, it was 6:45.

We met in the cafeteria,

and put on the chick and rooster headbands.

Ashlyn even got a new haircut for the occasion!


Is it 7:00 yet?

Finally, it was time to line up,

walk backstage,

and line up on the risers. Then...

the curtains opened!

It was so much fun to sing for a full house!
Whew! Before we knew it, it was all over! The kids waved and bowed at the very end when the audience clapped. The whole show was very fun, and everyone did an awesome job! I'm afraid I couldn't get pictures during the actual performance since I was a little busy playing the piano. However, a DVD was made and if you would like to purchase a recording of the whole concert, you can order one for $8.00. Get your orders in as soon as possible. Forms were sent home last week, or contact me at school and I will send you one.Thanks for coming to the show!

Concert Rehearsals

The big night will be here soon! The 1st and 2nd grade concert, "Cock-a-doodle Doo, Barnyard Hullabaloo," is Tuesday night, and the kids have been practicing very hard for weeks, learning songs, practicing dances, playing instruments, and making headbands. Last week, we had an all-1st grade rehearsal in Mrs. Zillgitt's room on Thursday, and then a 1st and 2nd grade rehearsal at the High School on Friday. We'll practice one more time on Tuesday, and then...SHOWTIME!!

We had to wear our headbands, too. The boys are roosters and the girls are chicks. The speakers practiced speaking into a fake microphone. We'll have a real one at the HS!

We have to speak slowly,

Signs of Spring!

Wow! March whipped right by, and we are finally into spring time! Signs of spring are everywhere in the elementary school, and teachers are especially happy that kids no longer need boots, snowpants, mittens, hats, scarves, heavy jackets, etc. Our get-ready time at the end of the day has been cut in half! Those boots were getting pretty raunchy at the end of the season, and I dreaded when a kid would ask me to help with a boot-liner. There's nothing worse than having to stick a hand into a wet, soggy boot! Please continue to send a jacket or sweat shirt every day because it is still cool at 8:00 am when the kids are outside before school.

We're into bunnies, eggs, and flowers now -how refreshing after a LONG season of snowmen and snowflakes!

The kids made these bunnies by cutting out 5 eggs, one big and four small. The big egg became the body, one small egg became the head, and the remaining three were cut in half lengthwise to make ears, arms, and legs.

Then the decorating began.

They added faces, clothes, bows, carrots, and baskets filled with eggs. Pretty cute, huh?

Since we hung them from the ceiling and they spin around, the back sides had to be decorated, too,

and a fluffy cotton tail was the finishing touch.

One of the Center projects for the last few weeks has been using markers to color several different egg patterns. The kids have worked very hard at using bright colors, staying in the lines, and NOT getting marker all over the table! They look great in our giant Easter basket on the bulletin board!

Lots of kids wore their Twins t-shirts on Friday for the home opener!

They were also very excited for foot long hotdogs for lunch, in honor of the big game. We just completed a measurement unit in Math, so before lunch, we checked with a ruler to see how long a foot is.

Yep - it's really 12 inches long!

The cooks were also dressed in Twins gear.

And so was Phyllis, our ticket-scanner.

Trip to Write On

Since the spring of 1989, the first graders from our school have been designing class t-shirts. My collection of shirts includes the names of every child I have had in my class for the last 23 years! It's quite a sight when I hang them all up outside our classroom. After making the design, we then go on a short trip to Write On, a local graphic design, printing and embroidering company, to see how our original artwork is transferred to our shirts. Owners Peggy and Don do a great job of setting up the tour, and their employees are very patient with the endless questions from curious first graders.

Peggy and Don recently moved their business to a new location in Kenyon, a very bumpy 20 mile bus ride from Cannon Falls. They have a much bigger display area for all of their products.

The kids were great listeners as Peggy showed them some of the products available from Write On.

T-shirts,

caps,

jackets, mugs, mouse pads, blankets, sport bags, the list goes on and on! After listening to everything Don and Peggy told us, the kids were very excited to start our tour.

We got to see the huge sewing machines that could sew hundreds of stitches a minute.

The kids were really good about keeping their hands away from the needles!

This machine was sewing jackets,

and this one was for sewing designs on hats.

We learned that computers are very important. All of the artwork is generated by a graphic designer who works with a special computer program. The designs are put on discs, which are then put into the drive of the sewing machines. The information on the discs tells the machines what color of thread to use, and what design to make - amazing!
The kids in each group got to choose clip art to make a picture on the computer.The finished pictures were sent to the printer and are now hanging in our classroom.

We also got to see the vinyl sign making department. This machine could cut vinyl with a very sharp blade. We did not touch!

The kids watched closely as a special sign was made for our classroom.

Finally, we got to see our design being transferred to our t-shirts. Most of them were already done, but several shirts were left to demonstrate the heat transfer process.

Our design looked really weird because all the printing was backwards before it was transferred.

First the excess paper was cut off of the transfer and the shirt was pre-heated.

Then, the transper was carefully placed on the shirt and it was heated again for about 15 seconds.

There, the ink is transferred to the shirt!

It was really hot when it came off the press!

We got to feel it when it was still hot, and it isn't backwards anymore!!
Don met with us again at the end of our tour, he gave us a treat, and then we headed back to school, just in time for playtime and lunch. One of the kids summed it all up: "That was the best trip ever!" Thanks, Write On, for our awesome t-shirts and another great trip!

And here we all are in our brand new shirts! We'll be wearing these for our up-coming April concert, "Cock-a-doodle doo, Barnyard Hullabaloo," and also for our class trip in May! All of the first graders have white shirts this year, but each class has it's own color of ink (purple, blue, green, and red).

Once again, the kids couldn't resist making goofy faces. What a crew!
